Donald Trump Best Choice For United States And The World

President Barack Obama's foreign policy has been a total disaster for the United States and the world. Any thought that Obama would be succeeded by another Democratic president should be of grave concern to the United States and the World. The likely Democratic presidential candidate is Hilary Clinton, former Secretary of State, who was also part of all that was wrong with US foreign policy under Obama, with the Benghazi episode readily coming to mind.

In examining the United States foreign policy under Obama, I have to start with my country Nigeria where Obama’s poor leadership led to the slaughtering of over 15,000 Nigerians and others in the past six years by Boko Haram. When the jihadist group, Boko Haram started its murderous campaign of imposing Islamic Sharia Law all over Nigeria starting from the North East, the Nigerian military was ill equipped for what was clearly a new type of war. True, Nigerian army had fought Civil War between 1967-1970. It was a conventional war and our soldiers’ right from the colonial era were trained to confront a conventional enemy. The situation was not helped by the fact that the military had been poorly equipped over the years as successive military governments were scared of equipping the army which can be turned against their despotic regimes. It was this military that former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria sent to confront terrorists who are ready to die. When helpless Jonathan ran to the United States for help given its superior military arsenal, his request was denied by Obama, citing alleged human rights abuses by Nigerian troops. The US government imposed the Leahy Law on Nigeria. The Leahy Law or Leahy amendment is a U.S. human rights law that prohibits the U.S. Department of State and Department of Defence from providing military assistance to foreign military units that allegedly violate human rights with impunity. It is named after its principal sponsor, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

While Obama denied Nigeria’s military help, the terrorists were getting unhindered supply of arms from Libya, due to irresponsible United States intervention in that country, which I will get to later. With little or no arms to confront the terrorists Nigeria had to retort to the black market to acquire arms to confront an enemy that was not ready to surrender under any circumstance. Out of frustration the Jonathan government was also forced to seek arms from China and Russia. That action allegedly infuriated Obama, who then conspired and literally hounded Jonathan out of power in the 2015 generation election in Nigeria in which Obama alleged donated his campaign strategist, David Axelrod to the eventual winner of that election, President Muhammadu Buhari. That is a story for another day. But suffice to say that the arms embargo imposed by Obama made Boko Haram stronger, and today Boko Haram has been affiliated to ISIS and Al-shaab of Somalia and has therefore become not only an existential threat to Nigeria but a threat to the world including United States. This takes us to Libya and the disaster Obama visited on that hitherto peaceful country.

President Obama and his Democratic party was instrumental to the ousting of Mummar Gaddaffi. The United States under the guise of bringing democracy to Libya instigated ‘popular’ revolt against Gaddaffi by propping up anarchists who eventually killed Gaddaffi in the most despicable manner. Instead of bringing democracy, Obama brought anarchy to Libya and total instability throughout the Magreb and sub-Saharan Africa as Al-qaeda in Magreb and Boko Haram just across the Sahara Desert grew stronger. Today nobody is sure who is in charge in Libya and the do-gooder Americans who wanted to bring democracy to Libyans are peacefully drinking their tea in the White House, while Libyans are bearing the brunt of their sloppy foreign policy, as war lords are controlling different oil fields in that country, even as it has become hotbed for incubation of terrorists by ISIS and exported across the world.

Despite the disaster that Obama brought to Libya, he was also determined to oust the leader of Syria, Bashar Al Assad, as if Assad goes he has any better alternative given his disastrous outing in Libya. Obama allegedly propped up anti-democratic elements who went on killing spree under the guise that they want to remove Assad from power for allegedly ‘killing his own people.’ All of a sudden, Syrian lives mattered, because it served the purpose of Obama’s incoherent foreign policy. Because of America’s weak leadership Jihadists under the aegis of ISIS are controlling parts of Syria, beheading Christians and others at will while Obama was busy issuing statements calling on Assad to step down. Such a sorry state for a world Super Power. With America reluctant to excise its power, and since nature abhors vacuum, the void has been filled by Russia, while the leader of the Free World is in the White House only condemning the action of Putin. While Obama had ran out of ideas on Syria, millions of Syrian refugees are flooding Europe and America’s action would soon consume Europe in years to come.  

From Nigeria to Syria, Iraq to Somalia and elsewhere around the world, no right thinking citizen of the world should pray for the Democrats to occupy the White House another day after the expiration of Obama’s tenure.

If there is any president that America and the world need desperately, it is Mr Donald Trump, a man I consider to be imbued with the Ronald Reagan spirit that would Make America Great Again!
