IBB And I Are Together
Frontline Presidential contenders, General Ibrahim Babangida and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has assured that they are working together to make sure that the presidency remains in the North in 2011.
The assurance was given by Atiku in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, by his Media Adviser, Mallam Garba Shehu. In the statement, the former Vice President dismissed as a hack story, the media report of a rift between him and Babangida on the presidential ticket of the PDP.
Atiku said reports of a rift between him and Babangida ws the figment of imagination of their collaboration to ensure that the zoning arrangement is retained for the benefit of all Nigerians, particularly the ethnic minorities who might be shut out of power if zoning is jettisoned.
“The media report is not surprising. Since the historic decision of Northern Governors to retain the zoning arrangement, it has become apparent that it was a matter of time before the advocates of the zoning arrangement are brought under attack.
“If the purpose of that media attack is to cause friction between advocates of zoning, then it is a lost battle.
“Our decision to advocate for the retention of zoning is based on conviction that a multi-ethnic country like Nigeria needs arrangements like zoning to guarantee that all ethnic nationalities either majority or minority have fair access to power.
“The arrangement will serve Nigeria well and no amount of attack in the media will cause a rift between General Babangida and me,” the statement concluded.
