IBB, Atiku Assure South East

Northern leaders have assured the people of the South East zone that the North would work to actualize a South-East presidency in 2015. Chief Ken Emechebe, who was among South East leaders that met with the Northern leaders on Tuesday to take a position on zoning told DAILY SUMMIT yesterday that the northern leaders including former President Ibrahim Babangida and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar took turn to re-assure the Igbos that the North would not disappoint them when the time comes.

Emechebe said that the Igbo leaders in turn assured the Northern leaders that the Igbos would work in every ward, in every local government and in every state to back a northern president in 2011.

Commenting further on the vexed issue of zoning and its imperative in today’s Nigeria, Emechebe who is a founding member of PDP said that it is through zoning that South East presidency could be realized.

Furthermore, he berated some founding members of the party, including former president Olusegun Obasanjo for saying that there was no zoning agreement in the party.

“In 2015, the coming of the presidency to the South East, to the Igbo of Nigeria is sacrosanct.

“So the principle of zoning is not a PDP thing. It is not a regional thing, it is a Nigerian thing,” he said.

He said the South-East is standing resolutely behind the North because the Igbos respect agreement noting that zoning was the result of a gentleman’s agreement between the stakeholders of the PDP.

“The PDP as a party sat down at various levels and zoned all offices. Anybody who is in particular office in Nigeria today was there on the basis of principles of zoning. Any office, from that of the Deputy Speaker, to the Speaker, to the Deputy Senate President, to the Vice President and President were all on the basis of zoning.

“It is absolutely irresponsible for any Nigerian leader particularly for a former Head of State like Obasanjo to sit up anywhere in the world and say that he knows nothing about zoning. It is irresponsible, it is callous, absolutely callous and the Igbos of Nigeria condemn this.”
