Did Buhari Interfere With Rivers Rerun Elections?
Is the governor of Rivers State,
Chief Nyesom Wike right to exonerate President Muhammadu Buhari from the security
fiasco that characterised the rerun elections conducted in Rivers State last
Saturday?
Governor Nyesom Wike reportedly lauded President
Muhammadu Buhari for distancing himself from the re-run elections in the state,
saying he did not interfere with the exercise. The governor rather accused the
Minister of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Amaechi of allegedly plotting to rig
the elections.
I think Wike misfired this time. Yours truly and
the rest of the television viewers around the world saw the video showed by
Channels Television, where Chibuike Amaechi stormed a police station where an
INEC official was being held accompanied by men in military uniform. The last
time I checked, President Buhari is still the Commander-in-Chief of Nigerian
Armed Forces and the soldiers would be running around a ‘bloody civilian’
without the consent of the Commander-in-Chief.
I think Wike is just trying to be politically
correct, so that security agents would not be plotting his impeachment as they
are alleged to be plotting against governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, who has
been the thorn on the flesh of the Buhari’s administration.
If Buhari is not an interested party in the rerun
elections in Rivers State let him compel the INEC chairman which he appointed
and the electoral body, to release the rest of Rivers rerun elections result
except the eight local governments that was officially cancelled by INEC.
Unless the president does that his neutrality is
suspicious. Already the jury out there is that the results are allegedly withheld
because the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dusted the All Progressives Congress
(APC)-the party of the president. The world is watching.
Let me paraphrase the eternal words of Usman Dan
Fodio (1754-1817): A society can survive without religion; but no society can
survive without justice. Let Buhari do justice to Rivers people. Let Rivers
rerun election results be announced by INEC as demanded by Nyesom Wike and
Rivers people.
