WHY UNITED STATES MUST SAVE MORSI?
The
president of Egypt, Mohammed Morsi, was democratically elected by the people of
Egypt and it is only fair that he should leave office the same way he came in. Morsi
was elected to serve a four year term, yet in one year all problems of Egypt
have been heaped on his door steps to solve; in one year! The threat by the
Egyptian army to overthrow his government if he failed to succumb to the
dictates of the mob or resign must be resisted by United States which claims to
be promoting democracy around the world. If Morsi is not saved, no democracy in
Africa is safe; in a continent where military dictatorship had been rife. Lest
we forget, it was in Egypt that the first military coup took place in the
continent in 1952 and was soon copied by trigger happy soldiers in Togo, Ghana
and elsewhere including Nigeria. If Egypt’s new found democracy is imperil then
democracy in Africa, including Nigeria cannot claim to be safe. That is why the
silence of African Union(AU) is not golden as the mob in Tahir Square, Cairo
try to force out a democratically elected president under whatever guise. It
is ironic that the world will stand by and watch the Egyptian army that should
be holding its head in shame like their former counterparts in Africa, trying
to claim the status of “guardians of Egyptian democracy and revolution” the
same way that Turkish army had been doing over the years until the present
president of Turkey put them in their place. I detest military rule whether in
my country Nigeria or in Africa or anywhere for that matter. The idea that any
military in Africa can be a substitute to democracy is quite repugnant. America
and President Barack Obama should know it; the world is watch. In fact African
soldiers who had been spoiled by previous attempts to govern the populace are
watching. If Egyptian army succeed in kicking out Morsi under their so-called
road map for Egypt, then the world should not be surprised when other African
soldiers start kicking out “corrupt politicians” throughout Africa. Let’s be
clear about this, some of the policies of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood may
have hurt a lot of people and even the fundamentalist posturing of his
administration may have alienated many Egyptians in the past one year, but this
is a government they chose. They saw the secularist parties and chose the
Islamist leaning Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi and have to live with their
choice until the next election. America must not succumb to the democracy of
the mob. Morsi must be saved. AU must also speak up. I write as a concerned
African and Nigerian. The mess we have in Nigeria today can be traced to decades
of military dictatorship. Despite all the stealing of public funds by
politicians in the past 14 years in Nigeria(which needs to be addressed) it is
nothing compared to what the military leaders stole. The military superintended
over the destruction of all the infrastructure in the country including the
national electricity board, NEPA, railway, refineries, airlines, roads and
schools at all levels. It is only now that the infrastructures destroyed by
years of military dictatorship are being rebuild and expanded. Given the poor record of
military dictatorship in Africa, America must not allow Egypt fall into the
hands of the soldiers. The coup in Egypt can never succeed without United
States support. America cannot deceive the world that it was popular revolt
that drove out Morsi from power. Obama save Morsi!
