First Day At Presidential Villa: Buhari Orders Removal of Military Checkpoints
Military checkpoints |
President Muhammadu Buhari on his
first day of operating from his office at the Presidential Villa Abuja has
ordered the immediate removal of all military checkpoints.
The News Agency of Nigeria quoted the Permanent
Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismail, as the source of the president’s
directive.
It is unclear whether checkpoints in the
North-east, set up in the wake of the Boko Haram insurgency, would also be
removed.
Military checkpoints multiplied across Nigeria
after the insurgency intensified, causing terrible traffic snarls and
subjecting commuters to untold hardship.
However, security experts repeatedly argued that it
was better for Nigerians to bear the inconveniences caused by military
checkpoints than allow Boko Haram insurgents free passages to targets in
cities.
