Saraki: A History Of Rebellion

Saraki
Senate President Bukola Saraki has a rich history of rebelling against any policy or decision that was not in conformity with his politics and belief.
Senator Saraki it would be recalled rebelled against his father, the strongman of Kwara politics, late Dr Olusola Saraki when the father wanted to impose Gbemi Saraki, Bukola’s sister as the governor of Kwara State just as Bukola was leaving the governorship seat of the state after eight years. Bukola believed that it was poor politics and being insensitive to the diversity of the state if the governorship seat is rotated within the family. He stood his ground and paved the way for Alhaji Abdulfattah Ahmed to become governor instead of his sister.

Bukola Saraki was the senator who even though he was a member of the PDP-the government in power-tabled before the Senate allegations on the monumental corruption bedevilling the fuel subsidy regime which brought him in conflict with the President and the leadership of the party.
He also opposed the plan by some in the APC who were promoting Muslim-Muslim presidential and vice presidential candidates for the party ahead of the 2015 general election, again insisting that this agenda is insensitive and goes against the religious diversity in the country. Tinubu was known to be a promoter of the agenda and even put himself up for vice presidential slot even though he was a Muslim like the presidential candidate of the party, Muhammadu Buhari.

He was also a major player in rebellion against the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan and joined forces that broke away from the PDP and joined forces with the opposition parties to wrest power from the PDP.

And on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, he exhibited his rebellious self and went against the wishes of the APC leadership and emerged the Senate President and Chairman of the 8th National Assembly.
