Presidency: Igbo Women Endorse Jonathan For Second Term
Jonathan |
A southeast women group, Ada-Igbo Nile
Foundation has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term of
office.
The group made its position known at
a world press conference addressed by the president general of the group and
former commissioner of Works, Anambra State, Lolo Hephziba Ibeneme to commemorate the unveiling the group’s
agenda for the women and their position on the forthcoming general election.
According to Lolo Ibeneme, Igbo women
right from the Aba women riot of 1929 had always been conscious of their
political environment noting that the Ada-Igbo Nile foundation which is made up
of Igbo women in Nigeria and diaspora has decided to endorse the re-election of
President Goodluck Jonathan on account of his remarkable achievements in the
last four years.
According to Ibeneme having evaluated
the achievements of President Jonathan resolved that, “ Another four years for
him will place Nigeria on a better pedestal for economic growth and rapid
development. Again, Mr President’s empowerment programme for women of Nigeria
has remained unequalled by any other administration in Nigeria. We therefore,
call on other Igbo women in Nigeria and diaspora and, by extension, all Nigerian
women who are registered voters, to go back to their respective places of
registration and cast their vote for GEJ.
“ In line with the Beijing
declarations of 1995, which Nigeria domesticated, Ada-Igbo Nile Foundation
(I-WIND) and Nigerian women at large will demonstrate their full acceptance of
GEJ by using our vote to return him a second time, so that, he will in the
spirit of Being declarations of 1995, fully implement his own part by
appointing more women to policy making to policy making positions.
“Ada-Igbo Nile Foundation (I-WIND)
examined the political terrain, and has therefore, come to a conclusion that
she will mobilise, support and endorse President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe
Jonathan in the forthcoming election whose vision for the empowerment of youths
and women is firmly irreversible.
“We call on Nigerian security
agencies to ensure adequate protection of all voters especially women in the
forthcoming elections.”
The group also called on all
Nigerians to return all women who have shown themselves capable of delivering
the dividends of democracy to the grassroots from their various offices.
It also “thanked the indefatigable
First Lady, the able wife of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
and commander in chief, Her Excellency, Dame (Dr) Mrs Patience Goodluck
Jonathan (Mama Peace) for her doggedness and absolute resolution to champion
women programmes and agenda.”
