The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has congratulated Nigeria’s President-Elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) on his victory at the polls saying his tenacity has helped restore hope in the future of multi-party democracy in the country.
A statement issued by CNPP Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu urged General Buhari to include further expansion of the democratic space on his agenda while he should also prioritize strengthening the independence of INEC.
“Your tenacity and commitment to offering yourself for service is a lesson for all Nigeria as you have proven that Nigeria can achieve anything the citizens set their minds on achieving. We are rest assured that this can do spirit will take the country to the next level under your leadership.
“Events from your party’s primary that produced you as its flag bearer up to the Presidential Election have shown that Nigeria’s democracy can mature faster than we all anticipate. We urge you to continue this democratic progress both as it relates to internal democracy in political parties and the independence of INEC.” The statement said.
Meanwhile, the conference also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his statesmanship that helped to immediately douse the tension that had built up in the country prior to the election.
“President Goodluck Jonathan must be commended for his sportsmanship and statesmanship in immediately congratulating the winner of the election. He has proven that Nigeria remains one indivisible entity under God as he effectively prevented people from cashing in on his loss to unleash chaos on the land.
“Beyond reforming the electoral process in Nigeria, President Jonathan has set the standard for the level of statesmanship expected in future political contests in the land.” CNPP said.
