Impeachment: Court Adjourns Fubara's Suit To December 20
A Rivers State High Court sitting in
Isiokpo has adjourned till December 20, 2023, hearing on a suit brought by
Governor Siminalayi Fubara over the impeachment plot against him by the state
House of Assembly.
The development followed the
appearance of two sets of lawyers, in the defence of Hon Martin Amaewhule-led
legislature and the House of Assembly headed by Hon Edison Ehie.
Fubara, had approached the court
sitting at Isiokpo, headquarters of Ikwerre local government area of the state,
to stop the House, the speaker, the deputy speaker, the clerk of the House and
the chief judge of the state, from impeaching him.
The lawyers told the court that they
are appearing for two different sets of clerks who are also defendants.
One of the lawyers from the Edison
Ehie’s camp, who pleaded for anonymity, in an interview explained that due to
the conflicting legal representation, the judge advised them to sort themselves
out and return to court over who is the right person representing the
defendants.
It was observed that the
conflicting legal representation in the current suit instituted by Fubara may
not be unconnected to the speakership tussle in the Rivers State House of
Assembly following the impeachment proceedings on October 30, 2023.
